For only 4.5 million kwacha (R80,000) a Malawian man was allegedly set to sell his biological sister.
Police in Malawi’s southern district of Mangochi arrested the 25-year-old man on suspicion that he was planning to do so.
The man blames poverty.
Mangochi Police Station spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi has confirmed the incident, identifying the man as Mphatso Baison from Chawanje Village, Traditional Authority Ganya, in Ntcheu District.
Although the transaction was not successful, Baison faces seven years in jail with hard labour if he is found guilty.
Daudi said it is alleged that on 1 March the suspect approached one of the community policing members in Mangochi and pitched a business offer — the commodity was his own sister.
The community policing member tricked the suspect, took him to the chief of the area and alerted the police.
According to Daudi, Baison has confessed to having wanted to sell his sister, telling the police that he was forced into the act by poverty.
He will appear before the court after the completion of paperwork to answer to the charge of buying or disposing of a person as a slave contrary to Section 267 of the Penal Code, which attracts a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.
