Alexandra is one of the special townships in South Africa with a diverse population, yet it is controversially disadvantaged.

Despite its unemployment or economic challenges that the community is exposed to, the residents support each other in various forms.

Recently, many organizations that are always hard at work to ensure that Alex becomes a better place were recognized.

Despite their tireless efforts to improve their township, many of these organizations or volunteers are not acknowledged. The event made volunteers aware that even if they don’t always receive recognition, someone is still paying attention to them.

The idea to honor them with certificates came from the Ward 105 SANCO Chairman, Mr. Dumisani ‘Guffy’ Nkosi, who thought it would be a good idea to give appreciation to the volunteers of Ward 105.

A planning team was then formed in just less than a month that included the SANCO members namely; Secretary Ms. Lerato Babili, Zone Secretary Ms. Thoko “Thopy” Matseke, Mpho, Pheladi, Suzan, Bonnie and Daniel, Green Vines Nature NPC members namely; Director Ms. Thoko Simelane, Intern Project Manager Mr. Banele Smith, Renavhuyo Pty Ltd Director Ms. Rose Mafuta and Areganyeng NPC members Mr. Jacky Matlala and PCA Ms. Thandi Mthombeni.

The planning team was given tasks and all came together with a Zero Budget.

The donations came from ward 105 Community, Spaza shops and Watloo Pan Africa.

The organizers said that the event held in a park in Westbank also gave birth to the first picnic Christmas Party, which will be an annual initiative.

The volunteers of different organizations came flooding in for their set day namely; SANCO, K-105 Patrollers, Imisebenzi Yethu, Alex Water and Sanitation, Areganyeng NPC and Green Vines Nature NPC.

Each NPC organization expressed gratitude to the volunteers and pledged to improve in the coming year.

Apart from the free launch and dancing, certificates were awarded to all volunteers who attended.

“We are optimistic that by next year, more NGO’s, NPO’s, and other stakeholders in Ward 105 will collaborate and work together to improve the environment for its residents,” said Director Ms. Thoko Simelane.
