The Department of Education in Free State, Schools and Community are mourning the passing of a grade 10 and 11 teacher at Tsoseletso Secondary School in Bloemfontein.
It is reported that Mrs Judith Mpho Moalasi (41) was gruesomely killed allegedly by her boyfriend on Sunday, 16 June 2024.
The boyfriend reportedly drove the car over her body multiple times near G4S Mangaung prison and left her on the scene.
After his arrest, the perpetrator led the police to the crime scene where the body of the deceased was found.
Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has condemned the brutal murder of a Free State teacher with the strongest possible terms.
Makaneta said he received reports that the teacher was brutally murdered by her boyfriend on June 16 2024.
He said he was informed by the Free State education department that apparently the boyfriend drove the car over the body of the deceased multiple times.
“We send a message of hope and goodwill to friends and family of the deceased teacher.
“It is encouraging that police have already arrested the perpetrator. We also hope that the prosecution authority will leave no stone unturned to ensure that Mrs Moalosi gets justice.
“The loss of life, particularly that of a teacher, is very distressing as it robs the country’s learners of quality time for learning and teaching. Some of the learners may not be able to recover from the post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the untimely death of their teacher.
“Teachers are responsible for moulding future generations. It is unfair that the learners have to now go and bury their teacher,” Makaneta said.
Makaneta said the education terrain as a whole is shattered, adding that Eleducation in South Africa is a right. He said by killing the teacher, the perpetrator has tempered with the learners’ right to learn.
“Instead of focusing on learning and teaching, the children must now receive psycho Social support. Even though the teacher will eventually be replaced by another teacher in that classroom, the reality is that no one can replace her as she is unique and no one can cut the bond that she has already created with her learners.
“The murderer has caused irreparable damage not only to the learners and teachers at Tsoseletso secondary school, but to society at large. Society as a collective will never recover from this brutal act of murdering an educator.
“It is for this reason that we plead with the prosecution authority to ask the court for a very lengthy jail term for the perpetrator in order to send a message to society in general that killing our teachers will not be tolerated.”
