A 15-YEAR-OLD grade 10 pupil is under police guard in hospital following his arrest.
It has been reported that he allegedly stabbed and killed a 21-year-old matric pupil inside a classroom at Sihlahlasenkosi High School in Musi Village, Nongoma, northern KZN on Monday, 29 July.
It’s alleged that the 15-year-old entered the matric pupils’ classroom to confront and stab the older pupil, Seluleko Zondi. A fight broke out, resulting in the death of one matric pupil and the suspect being hospitalised under police surveillance.
The conflict reportedly started over the weekend in one of the local villages. The younger pupil then allegedly brought the dispute to school on Monday, 29 July, disrupting the day’s teaching and learning as pupils were sent home.
KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka emphasised that security and safety are top priorities for providing quality education in the province. He expressed deep concern over the sharp increase in school-related violence.
“Schools are sacred places for teaching and learning, and the recent rise in violence levels has sent shockwaves across the province,” he stated.
MEC Hlomuka said that efforts are ongoing with partners, including law enforcement, to address the increase in school violence and crime.
“A school safety conference will be held with all education role-players to raise awareness among pupils, educators, parents, and the community about the importance of maintaining a safe and conducive school environment,” said the MEC.
KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.
“Reports indicate that the deceased had a dispute with some boys from a neighbouring village over the weekend. He reportedly entered the matric pupils’ classroom with a knife, allegedly to confront certain learners.
” A fight ensued, and during the scuffle, the 21-year-old was stabbed with a knife by the 15-year-old, who was also reportedly hit with a brick or stone and injured,” he explained.
Both pupils were rushed to the hospital, where the 21-year-old succumbed to his injuries.
“Police investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident. More arrests are possible,” said Netshiunda.
