While other women in South Africa were celebrating Women’s Day, Sibongile and other residents at 57-13th Avenue in Alex were abused by a dreadful smell.
The foul smell has been a daily occurrence for almost a month, and the woman says it has caused her pain because nobody seems to care.
“I write to you with so much pain in my heart. I am a resident of Alex, and the conditions we are living in are atrocious. We have had a sewerage problem for over 1 month.
“The sewerage is pouring into our houses. We reported the matter to all the relevant people and to date nothing has been done. When leaving the house just to go to the shop, we have to put on gumboots.
“In this day and age, are our people still living in such poverty? The bucket system was much better than this. I have 2 children living with me, and I’m having to deal with infection and infection. We vote for councilors who are getting paid for doing absolutely nothing.
“Our councilors have failed us. It’s getting worse every day. Another ANC member has spoken to Floyd (Ngwenya, ward 107 councilor). He came with Johannesburg Water and they did a visual assessment.
“They said they can’t access the pipes because of structures that are built around the man hole. Why is it such an issue for those structures to be removed as this problem will never be solved?” said the woman
At the time of going to press, Ngwenya hadn’t responded to our questions. However, we will update the story when he comments.
