Rebecca Mphahlele (58), her two children, Mohau (40) and Rethabile (36), from Ga-Mphahlele village, Maralaleng section near Lebowakgomo, can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Rebecca’s son, Mohau, was born with a rare illness known as Cerebral Palsy in August 1984, and since then, he has never walked.

When Mohau was born naturally, Rebecca thought that he would be able to walk.

She said that she only became aware of his disability when he was 6 months old when he was struggling to sit down. The doctor advised the family to attend Physiotherapy sessions when she took him to Lebowakgomo hospital.

Due to her financial instability as a single parent, she stopped taking him to the hospital because she couldn’t afford the transportation costs.

After many years of empty promises from the hospital to give the family a mobility device, Pastor Nareamohlala Khuto of Salvation Church situated at Praktiseer outside Burgersfort approached Thomo Nkgadima, a Philantropist, to step in and donate a manual lightweight wheelchair to the destitute family.

“During our visit to the family, she told us that she had accepted him as a gift from God,” said Nkgadima.

Rebecca expressed that Mohau is not easy to carry around. “I can’t forget the pain and suffering I have endured for many years. I feel very excited for the grace and mercy of God,” she said.

Mohau had been imprisoned in the house for the past 40 years and is incapable of sitting or speaking, so he uses his hands to demonstrate while he speaks. He uses nappies and he can’t hear very well.

Now his mother can walk with him to church or to local shops, or take him outside the house to sit under the tree when it is extremely hot, using his wheelchair to push him around.

The family caregiver can be reached at 073 342 7524/072 749 5935.
