A nerve-wrecking scene in Khutsong yesterday was attended by ambulances from all over Merafong and even some EMS staff from outside Merafong.

Just a week into the new term, a school bus transporting children, allegedly from Relebogile Secondary School, overturned in front of the Khutsong Police Station.

Although the Observer has not been able to confirm exact numbers and extent of the injuries to the driver and children in the bus, it is understood that 42 injured children were taken to the Carletonville Hospital.

A video we are in possession of shows heavily traumatized children quickly running from the open windscreen of the bus and being assisted by bystanders. One woman could be heard shouting “Quickly get away from there before it explodes.”

“The vehicle was involved in an accident, resulting in injuries to multiple passengers. Two learners sustained severe injuries, while others on board suffered minor injuries,” says a message by SADTU (South African Democratic Teachers Union) in Merafong.

“Fortunately, all individuals involved in the incident survived. Emergency services responded promptly, providing medical assistance and transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities for further treatment. An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.”

At the start of last term, the Merafong community was shocked when 11 children and their driver died after the overturned taxi they were in went up in flames.
