She released her first album called Kabelo yaka in 2006 and recorded the music video for it.
When she took the music video to the SABC to have it played, she said she was told the quality was not up to standard. Instead, the SABC crew members offered her to record a new music video for her for free!
And that was the starting point of Esther’s music career.
Esther Makgamatha from Soshanguve in Tshwane said she was excited to have her music video done by professionals.
“After the whole packaging of my music video was done, I received much airplay from different televisions and radio stations.
“People loved my work,” she said.
Known to her fans in the music industry as Pebetsi, Esther said her the first award came when she was in high school when her teachers awarded her for being a lead vocalist for the school assembly choir.
“From that age, I knew that I had a talent and I was gifted,” she said.
Pebetsi said she waited to finish her tertiary first before reviving her music career in 2001. “I released my first album called Kabelo yaka in 2006.
“The album gave me exposure as the SABC shot a music video for me for free and received great airplay.”
Pebetsi released her second album called Re a lwana (we are in war) in 2008.
“The title track of my second album is my all-time hit song which people also love.
“Wherever I go perform, people cannot get enough of the track,” she said.
She said in 2018, she released her third album called Through it all. “It is was after I went through a painful divorce that I composed and released my third album.
The album was nominated for three categories at Ingoma awards: Best female artist, the song of the year and best album.
“I love installing hope, faith, healing and peace through my talent as a musician,” she said.
Pebetsi said she will be back in the studio planning for her fourth album next month.
