Mamelodi resident Duncan Ndlali (50) was sentenced to 30 years in prison by the Pretoria Magistrates Court for raping a nine-year-old girl.
Ndlali travelled to his girlfriend’s grandfather’s house in Nellmapius in February 2019.
According to NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the girlfriend and the mother of the child had gone to a funeral.
Mahanjana said when Ndlali arrived, he found the child in the kitchen, making herself some food while the grandfather was still sleeping in his bedroom.
Ndlali allegedly took the child to the other room, placed her on the bed, stripped her naked and began molesting the child. The girl struggled with him and began to cry and he stopped.
“When the child’s mother returned home later that day, the child told her mother what had happened and the mother reported the matter to the police and Ndlali was arrested and has been in custody since.
“Ndlali pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape.
“The Court Preparation Officer prepared the child for court; however, the child utilised the court intermediary services to testify and was also referred for counselling.
“The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence,” said Mahanjana.
