On 12 March 2022, police arrested a 19-year-old man on rape charges at the corner of Delvers and Albert Street after allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl on 11 March 2022.
The girl was left with a suspect’s mother while her mother was at KZN.
Captain Xoli Mbele said that the suspect came into the room and locked her up, put a rag in her mouth so she couldn’t shout when he raped her.
After he was done, he forced her to take a bath and threatened her not to tell anybody. She then phoned her mother and alerted her.
“On the 12th of March 2022, police were stopped by a mother of the child and alerted them about the whereabouts of a suspect.
“He was assaulted by the community before police came to his rescue. He was taken to hospital under police guard. He will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court after he is discharged from the hospital,” said Mbele.
The Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Perumal condemned in a strongest possible terms assault on a suspect.
He added that the community should not take the law into their own hands because it is a crime.
