In the media statement NUM has mourned the death six of its members who perished in the horrific accident.
The six leaders died in the car accident in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
“The Nationa Union of Mineworkers (NUM) would like to confirm the sad news that were published and circulated throughout the media platforms yesterday (Sunday 27 November 2022) that indeed six members of NUM got involved in a horrific deadly accident on the N4 toll road between Middelburg and Emalahleni.
“The comrades were driving back from the NUM National Youth Structure Conference in the city of Mbombela in Mpumalanga.
“The comrades were driving together with the NUM PWV Regional Secretary comrade Bonginkosi Mrasi well known as ‘Bongz’,” said the statement.
The other five comrades were NUM Youth Structure (NUM-YS) members at Kloof branch and delegates to the Youth Structure Con7erence.
All the deceased were all employees of Sibanye Stillwater.
The names of the deceased comrades are Bonginkosi Bongz Mrasi – NUM PWV Regional Secretary, Zukile Maskot (NUM-YS Kloof Branch Secretary), Lulama Madyosi (NUM-YS Kloof Branch Chairperson), Thantaswa Sikani (NUM-YS Kloof Branch Secretary), Retshidisitswe Mbirha (NUM-YS Kloof Branch Deputy Secretary) and Dumisani Futshana (NUM-YS member).
“On behalf of the NUM National Executive Committee (NEC), staff members and everyone associated with this giant trade union, we send our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased comrades during this difficult times,” said NUM Deputy General Secretary Mpho Phakedi.
All details pertaining to memorial services and funerals of the comrades will be made known as soon as they become available.
“May the soul of the deceased comrades rest in revolutionary peace. Hambani kahle Maxabani Aka Elijah Barayi!!,” reads the statement.
