Dorcas ‘Didi’ Lekganyane, aged 32, was reportedly stabbed to death by her partner in their residence in Bramley, Johannesburg on July 11, 2024.

Authorities allegedly found Didi with multiple stab wounds when they responded to a domestic violence incident.

At the scene, her partner was also found to have attempted suicide after the tragic incident.

He was hospitalized and placed under police supervision. The police have confirmed that he will be charged with murder once he is fit to face court proceedings.

Didi, a renowned academic and globally respected scientist, was recognized in June 2024 as one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in the ‘Climate Change & Environment’ category, acknowledging her remarkable contributions and dedication.

Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said police were investigating a murder case.

“Her partner was also found in the house. He was taken to a local hospital where he was placed under police guard. He will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon.”

In a statement, her family said Lekganyane was a beacon of light whose death will be mourned by many people she impacted with her work and humanity.
