While other young people are misplaced and polluted with all kinds of drugs, some young people in Alexandra work tirelessly behind the scenes to improve others.
Two years ago, Alex School of Excellence was birthed, thanks to founders such as Gundo Ramahanedza (21) and Khodani Davhana (22).
The school recently made Gomora proud when it, in partnership with Alex’s Basketball Academy, engaged in a basketball tournament playing against Katlegong Bulls in Ekurhuleni.
The under-sixteens returned with a gold medal, while the under-eighteens, boys and girls, won the silver medal.
Gundo, with his partner, Khodani, were given the opportunity by their senior coach, Jonathan Khumalo, to coach the players. Alpheus ‘Ali’ Mothibi is the senior coach.
Gundo said he and his partners have been coaching since 2019, but because of the Covid-19, they had to put the practice on pause.
“Winning is a great feeling and we hope to put Alex on the map with our school,” he said.
The tournament took place at Germiston Stadium, where their team also competed with competitors such as Edanvalle, K1 Bulls, Elandale and
Spartans, amongst others.
He said the Alex School of Excellence was established in 2019 when he and his partners participated in a youth summit in Alexandra.
He said they saw a need for excellence in their community and decided to do something about it.
“We then came with the concept of the Alex school of excellence, which has since been registered with the Department of Social Development (DSD).
“We want to showcase the talent, excellence and skills that the youths in our community possess by giving them a platform and a chance to show that one doesn’t have to be educationally gifted to make it in life.”
Gundo said the school’s mission is to grow and mature young and old talent by building a school that will help them in expressing their different talents, whether it be sport, art and building.
“We want to become the first school in Alexandra, the voice to those that are cast aside and the ears to the ones that have been talking but are never listened to.
“As the school of excellence, we want to prove that everyone has a spark of excellence in them.”
The school is also comprised of the following hard-working members of the school: Leandro Mcianga (24),
Toka Mphela (21), Tondi Ramahanedza (24),
Alpheus Mothibi (32).
