City Power has it welcomes the swift response by the law enforcement agencies in attending to a complaint where meter audit teams were pointed with guns in Bezuidenhout Valley in Johannesburg.

The team was doing a meter audit as part of Revenue Enhancement campaign, after some houses in the area were flagged as illegally connected and not vending.

“Immediately after being cut off the customer went to ganner support from a group of people who filled in two cars.

“They came armed with guns and pointed our electricians, forcing them to illegally reconnect them. Failure to do that our guys were threatened to be shot on the spot.

“They were called later and told they will be followed and killed if they report what they experienced to the police,” explained Charles Mohlaka, General Manager – City Power: Inner City.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, the police were called in to accompany “our team to the house and effected the cut off as planned, and a fine was also imposed on the owner of the property”.

“A case of intimidation, pointing of a firearm and vandalism of essential municipal infrastructure was opened with the police,” said Mangena.

Mangena called on the police to arrest the suspects and “ensure justice is serve. This should also serve as a warning to to other customers who attack municipal workers”.

He said the incident come at a time when City Power teams recorded several threats and attacks in recent days during their work.

“Just last week a team working in Jeppestown was attacked and robbed by gun-wielding criminals, while another team was hijacked and robbed in Alexandra recently.

“City Power condemns the attacks on our teams who are doing their work to ensure there is service delivery.”
