The 55-year-old head of the Rivers of Living Waters Ministries, Archbishop Stephen Bafana Zondo, appeared briefly at the Sebokeng Regional Court on charges of rape, contravening the Sexual Offences Act, as well as defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged that one of the victims that Bishop Zondo, who faces nine counts, allegedly repeatedly raped is a family member.

According to National Prosecution  Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson,  Lumka Mahanjana, Bishop Zondo allegedly raped the victim in 1980 while she was eight or nine years old while other victims that were allegedly raped and/or sexual assaulted were members of his congregation.

Mahanjana said the matter was transferred for trial at the High Court of South Africa: Gauteng North Division sitting in Pretoria from the 23 August to 17 September 2021
