Whilst we respect the judgment of the High Court in Cape Town, we still believe that Mr Zandile Mafe is a scapegoat in this case of the burning of Parliament.
It is alleged that Mr Mafe set Parliament alight, but we strongly believe that he was only the messenger. The masterminds are still roaming the streets.
It is very unfortunate that Mr Mafe was declared unfit to stand trial. The country will never hear or know the truth, but if the trial was allowed to proceed, the court will be able to go to the bottom of the case.
The case of Zandile Mafe reminds us of the case of former Apartheid Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd who was stabbed to death by Dimitri Tsafendas inside Parliament. Court also declared Tsafendas unfit to stand trial. Until today, the country doesn’t know who the mastermind behind Verwoerd’s death is.
The burning of Parliament was a well planned criminal action.
Activists and Citizens Forum urged the law enforcement agencies to pursue this case. In our view, the setting alight of Parliament is High Treason. Part of the country’s heritage was destroyed.
We cannot just accept the verdict of the court that Mr Mafe is unfit to stand trial.
