Originally from Alexandra, but now based in Ferndale, Randburg, Siyabulela Collen Mokebe is mostly known as ‘Vato’. However, people who went to school with him, particularly at primary level, call him Sabzin.

His first book is Tamanna for Change, a memoir he will be launching on October 26th.

The second book was ‘The Science of Learning, followed by ‘Beyond the Pass Mark’, his recent one.

“My experiences as a math teacher working amongst other math teachers led me into writing this book. It explains why it is wrong to remove math rigor in math tests to ensure that many learners pas.

“As much as we want learners to pass math, we also don’t want to dilute the content to the point of end up accommodating laziness at the expense of those who are serious about understanding the underlying principles and fundamental concepts of the subject, he said.

Collen said he was intrinsically motivated to write. “My learners have been my source of motivation though. They constantly ask for the next publication.

“This propels me forward and ensures that I don’t stop writing.”

His message to the general public is,”They must understand that contributions to the betterment of society aren’t just for a selected few.

“We all have to contribute something. I chose teaching and writing. Others chose various fields but the bottom line is that we all have to contribute something. Ask yourself this question. What is your contribution to the betterment of society?”
