A 48-year-old male, Eric Nkuna, was killed by the angry crowd in Vezinyawo in Alex, in what looks like a mob justice, while his accomplice was taken away by the ambulance.
Nkuna, resided at 19-15 Avenue in Alex. He and his accomplice had allegedly robbed two women who were passing by Alex Cemetery, at gun point
Apostle Sibusiso Tonjeni, whose church is situated near his home, told Alex Reporter that he was busy working in his garden , behind the cemetery, when he heard screams of terrified women.
“I hurried to find out what was going on. I met two men who said, “Let’s finish him,” Tonjeni said.
Tonjeni said the weapon was hidden in the little purse the thugs carried.
“The women continued to scream and the men ran along a shortcut to Vezinyawo.
“It was at this point that the community pursued them and cornered them,” he said.
Community members said, a phone was found when Nkuna allegedly confessed to having hidden it in the pocket.
A neighbour said Nkuna had just returned from prison.
“He was a person who used to be arrested for burglary and theft, but he didn’t use a gun. And he was still preventing kids from committing crimes.
“In our street , he was an activist who hated crime,” said a neighbour who asked to remain anonymous.
Nkuna’s other neighbor, Charlotte Motshwari (38), said she was the one who was told her neighbour had been assaulted by the community. .
“I rushed to to the scene. He had already died on my arrival.”
Tonjeni said that for the three consecutive Tuesdays, people had been robbed of their valuables at the graveyard.
“That’s the third time they’ve robbed anyone here. I’m sad.
“If the weapon they were carrying was a complete gun, they would have killed me,” the man of cloth said.
It was established that the thugs had a broken gun.
The police said they were still collecting information .
