Dumisani Msomi, a fepared gangster known as “Bhejani” (Rhino) from Highflats in KwaZulu-Natal, killed himself this week following a breakup with his girlfriend.
Bhejani shot himself on Monday after shooting his girlfriend, Mandisa Mgenge. He died at the scene, and she died a short while later in hospital.
Highflats community members couldn’t believe that someone as tough as Bhejani would be so affected by a breakup.
He had a reputation for taking the law into his own hands and often posted pictures of himself with pythons.
Bathobile Ngubo, regional secretary of the ANC Women’s League in the Harry Gwala region, condemned Bhejani’s actions and sent the league’s condolences to the Mgenge family.
“No woman should die at the hands of her partner or any other man,” said Ngubo. “It’s upsetting to see people on social media treating Bhejani as a hero.”
Mandisa had previously reported Bhejani to the police for abuse and had also filed for a protection order.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that after an argument with Mandisa, Bhejani shot her several times before turning the gun on himself.
And although Bhejani is dead, he will still be charged with murder and possession of an illegal firearm.
