Scarlett Lelethu Sokaukile (21) was recently named Queen of the Miss Siphosethu Arts Project (SSAP) at the Infested Beauty Pageant at East Bank Hall.
“I must say I am very overwhelmed by this and am very much humbled by such an honor,” says a gorgeous girl with infectious beauty who started modeling in 2017.
Scarlett had always been a child that loved wearing revealing clothes… she was thin. The way she walked and her personality had caught people’s attention.
“They were always asking me why I wasn’t trying to be a model. Since becoming a multitasker, I have no problem taking the risk, so I juggled school, netball, debate and modeling.”
She says she wasn’t inspired by anyone, but her passion for modeling was inspired by how powerful she felt on stage.
She is stimulated by kids who constantly tell her that she is their role model.
“Most definitely, those that I mentor look up to me. I bear in mind that someone looks up to my actions,” she says.
She has an academy for modeling (Scarlett Queens modeling academy) which aims to train young children how to model. The academy also helps them with modeling related duties free of charge.
She says she started this initiative because when “I started modeling, my parents did not take it seriously. I had to make plans and make ends meet so I could raise funds for registrations, clothing and transportation”.
The self-taught, had to pay for any training company. ” To date I have attended all of the competitions, but neither of my family has attended.
“Therefore, in creating this, I had other children who were in the same situation in mind and I wanted to be the beacon of faith for them. I want them not to feel the lack of support and, as I always say, to always count on faith and be triumphant.”
In the near future, she would like to see her academy develop and reach greater parts of Johannesburg and fortunately other provinces as well.
The hot queen, originally from Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape, now stays in Kagiso. She is studying education in the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth.
This is how she boldly describes herself: “I am a feminist, so I would like to focus more on my female peers. We were raised in societies were women were taught to be submissive to men.
“Their duties were to give birth, raise families and serve men with respect, while men went out to work for money to provide irrespectively, so that women would be totally dependant on men.
“That happens to be the reason why we face gender-based violence, sexual assault and gender inequity. So to my peers out there, this is the era where women took charge.
“It is the era where we realize our potentials and strength. A lot of businesses are already ran by women. A lot of women are taking up in industries. Therefore, let us stop living the shadow of men; let us live high and be independent.”
She believes it was high time women had equal and fair distribution of social and economic rights like men. “So when you go out there, treat yourself as a female king, not a Queen, because a Queen responds to a king.
“Love yourselves enough to fight against what you do not tolerate and respect yourself enough to stand ground for what you believe in.
“That way we would be creating a better environment for the future generation.”
According to Nomsa Motha, Founder and CEO of the director of the SSAP, the pageant is designed to promote a healthy competition and help develop the youth all around, focusing mainly on Alexandra Township.
“The pageant has been going on a yearly basis since 2018. The aim is to empower and celebrate the youth in embracing their beauty in and out, to encourage confidence, test their level of knowledge, to groom the future MR & MISS S.A /Universe and build their recognition.
“This will reduce the number of Teenage pregnancies, crime, drug abuse and other social issues the youth is facing. This platform will allow them to grow mentally and make smarter decisions.
“We have seen a positive impact that this competition creates, and we would like to continue this wonderful work for our community,” says motha.
