Gauteng Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for housing, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso has issued 250 title deeds to overjoyed residents of Lufhereng ,region D, west of Soweto.

According to Mabaso, Lufhereng is one of the City’s largest integrated housing developments, characterized by the provision and integration of diverse land uses and multiple housing opportunities for mixed-income households.

Mabaso said he was proud to have restored the dignity of some residents of Lufhereng extensions 5 and 6 this week.

“I gave them the opportunity to become first-time homeowners after years of renting backyard rooms or snacks.”
“I addressed residents under strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols alongside the Ward (53) Councillor, Cllr Mthokozisi Dlamini. It was a dream come true for the new homeowners, some of whom say they had almost lost hope after years of renting and living in informal settlements.

“I acknowledge that the City is faced with a huge housing backlog. But I urge residents in poorer communities to be patient as the municipality strives to provide more housing opportunities,” he said.

He said the provision of adequate homes was an integral part of achieving the City’s strategic developmental goals.

A beneficiary, Thembi Ngcongo (74) is delighted to receive a title deed.

“There is no better gift a parent can give their children and grandchildren, than that of a decent home.

“I did not know that one day when I depart this world, I would do so in a decent home in my name. I thought I would die at an informal settlement. Thank you so much for this gift (title deed), it means a lot to me and you have now given me hope to live longer,” said Ngcongo.

Another beneficiary, Daniel Seate (79) said he and his wife were delighted to finally own a home.

“Owning our home is a great feeling. We are very pleased that we now have this title deed. Thank you to all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure that I see this moment in my lifetime,” says a cheerful Seate.
“As the Government of Local Unity, our administration has dedicated itself to speeding up the delivery of title deeds. This is a top priority of my deliverables to residents of Joburg,” concludes Mabaso.
