Premier Panyaza Lesufi expected to visit the explosion site in Boksburg this morning.
According to Vuyo Mhaga, spokesperson of the premier, says Lesufi will today, Saturday, 24 December 2022, visit the explosion site where a truck carrying gas caught fire and exploded near the Tambo Memorial Hospital earlier this morning.
“The explosion resulted in 10 fatalities, injuring approximately 50 people,” Mhanga said.
Mhanga said Lesufi would be joined by Department of Cooperative Governance (CoGTA), Transport and Logistics and Infrastructure Development MEC’s Mzi Khumalo, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela and Lebogang Maile, respectively.
“Gauteng Emergency Services (EMS), ambulances, response and rescue vehicles and a disaster bus have been dispatched to the site,” he said.
A tuck carrying LP Gas has crushed into OR Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg.
Part of the hospital was on fire and patients scrambled to safety, according to sources.
The explosion happened on Hospital Road, a few metres from the hospital. .
The truck is reported to belong to LP Gas.
Three or four cars are also said to have been involved in the accident.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the tanker drove into a low-lying bridge.
