A Rasta in the name of Fana was lucky to be alive.
This after angry residents sought out those who allegedly burned part of the Altrek Sport Ground, where the office of Tefo Raphadu, 105 councillor was housed.
And Fana was one of the Rastas targeted by the mob, after he was allegedly behind the fire.
When they were done with Fana, they set alight more than 10 houses belonging to Rastas. Ultimately scores of dwellersint Rasta village were left homeless.
According to a source, a group of furious residents who supported Raphadu, stated that they were taking revenge.
“We wanted to take revenge and show those Rastas that burning the councilor’s office was a big mistake.
“If they had a problem with the municipal power, they should not have channelled their frustrations by torching the councillor’s office.
“But we did not want to burn the Rasta, we frightened him by pouring water over his body and that was a warning,” said a source.
Yesterday, a group of residents in ext 8, took to the street, barricaded Vasco with burning tyres and barred motorists from passing.
That also frustrated members of the Westbank community who confronted Rasta and cleared the road.
Rastas complained that Raphadu had failed to keep his promise to help install power in the Rasta Village .
Raphadu wrote on his personal Facebook: “Good day Bahlali.
“I’m writing this message with a heavy heart after my office was torched by the community.
“It’s unfortunate and the first time in the history of Alex that a government office has been burnt.
“We condemn this act of vandalism and Hooliganism in the strongest sense.
“We have opened a case of Arson against the perpetrators,we hope that Law enforcement will act swiftly and arrest these perpetrators.
“We call upon the community to condemn this action and reaffirm gore it will never be tolerated.”
The power outages in the Rasta village were a serious issue during Joyce Ngwenya’s time as a ward councillor.
