Giyani Brian ‘DJ Brian’ Rikhotso (born 1 January 1980) is a South African radio personality and host on Munghana Lonene FM, Club Dj and an entrepreneur.
On April 2015, Brian went from Mphensa-Mphensa to Afternoon Drive and was paired up with Sydney Baloyi to co-host the morning show.
Brian was born in Soweto, SA. He then relocated to Bolobedu near Tzaneen, Limpopo.
He attended the Matshwi Primary School in Bolobedu and then finished high school in Mokope before receiving journalism training at Technikon Pretoria (now Tshwane University of Technology).
He began his career as a broadcaster with Munghana Lonene FM in 2000 performing weekend shifts.
DJ Brian presented several shows on Munghana Lonene FM.
He first joined the station in 2000 as a stand-in presenter, mainly covering graveyard shifts while finishing his studies.
He went on to present the African World Music Show “Mindhzumba ya Afrika”, the show that made him revered.
In 2003, he began presenting the afternoon drive show ‘Vaxumi’, exchanging days with Conny ‘Conizer’ Mashimbye.
He subsequently secured a place at the breakfast slot in 2005, a program he maintained until his resignation in 2007.
In 2008, he moved to the station and co-hosted Phaphama with Sydney Baloyi.
In 2009, the team was joined by Tebogo Jacko Magubane as producer of the show, a move that saw the show rise to new heights.
Following the success of “Phaphama”, Dj Brian was moved to Afternoon Drive and paired up with Thembzana Reloaded and Nyiko Sithole as (a sports presenter) until April 2015.
In 2015, he was reinstalled to host the Munghana Lonene FM “Phaphama” breakfast show.
In 2018, DJ Brian moved to host “Dzumbana Mina”, midday show.
At the age of 23, Dj Brian was the station’s first presenter to win a Best Presenter of the Year award while presenting only two weekend programs.
He also exposed listeners to a new mixture of African music primarily from SADC countries.
His distinct taste in music saw him being the first at the station to play artists such as Salala from Madagascar, Koffi Olomide, Fally Ipupa, Papa Wemba; Kanda Bongo Man, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (previously known Zaire); and a variety of musicians from Mozambique, such as Zico, Tabassily and Mr Bow.
DJ Brian also has an enormous audience on social networks, including a very impressive YouTube tracking.
DJ Brian just released three albums of his own. In 2014, he made his mark by featuring Tsalanang-Inspector Mkhaba with his smashing hit, “Bafikile”.
This best-selling single was then compiled on DJ Cleo’s Eskhaleni 9.
His music video was aired on local and national television channels of the RSA and other neighboring African countries.
DJ Brian is a fan of Kaizer Chiefs F.C., and occasionally remarks on their fortunes during his show, a culture that was intensified during his time on “Phaphama” where he occasionally had Soccer debates with his co-host Sydney Baloyi who is a die-hard fan of the rival Orlando Pirates and a frequently mocked producer Tebogo Jacko Magubane who supports Pretoria based Super Sport United FC.
He married Zanele Carol Rikhotso in 2004. Moreover, he prefers that his private life be “private”.
DJ Brian was arrested on 9 February 2007 and later the case was rejected by the court due to the absence of evidence.
In fact, it was later figured out that there was nothing that connected Dj Brian with the case.
He also owns Bharule Communications, a multimedia communications firm, and DJ Brian Concepts, a communications firm that drives DJ Brian’s brand.
