The police in Giyani have launched a manhunt for unknown assailants who fatally shot a 59-year-old businessman from Mbaula village in the Giyani policing precinct on Tuesday night, 19 November 2024.

Police were summoned to the scene of the crime by community members at about 19:00. Upon their arrival, they found a truck loaded with sand parked in the middle of the road.

They were then directed to the lifeless body of an African male who had multiple gunshot wounds lying inside the truck.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased, a local businessman from Makhuva village, had received a call from an anonymous customer placing an order for river sand.

As per his usual practice, the victim proceeded to collect the sand and was on his way to deliver it when he was stopped by two African males pretending to be the customers who had placed the order.

The suspects opened fire on the driver, resulting in the victim’s death at the scene. The passenger in the truck managed to escape but was injured in the leg and was subsequently transported to the local hospital for medical treatment.

“The police are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in the investigation or help lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Lieutenant Colonel Jan Mbalati at 082 565 6491, Crime Stop at 08600 10111, or use the MySAPSApp,” said Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
