KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Ms Mbali Frazer, today attended a funeral service of Lwakhele Zulu, one of the seven learners of Mchitheki High School, in Zululand District, Nongoma, who tragically lost their lives as a result of a recent bus accident.

The accident occurred while the learners, from grade 10 and 11, were on a school trip.

On the day of the bus accident in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, en route to Durban, six learners lost their lives.

Department’s Head of Communication, Muzi Mahlambi said the KZN Department of Education further received a report stating that another learner, Lungani Sibiya, succumbed to his injuries
yesterday, bringing the total death toll to seven.

He said the other learners who lost their lives in the accident were, Lwakhele Zulu, Amanda Nhlebela, Sboniso Nsele, Mawande
Ndwandwe, Aphiwe Cebekhulu and Sanele Mabanga.

Addressing the gathering at the funeral service of Lwakhele Zulu in Nxongwane Community Hall, MEC Frazer expressed
her gratitude to all stakeholders and the entire community for rallying behind the bereaved families during this challenging
time.

Frazer subsequently visited the bereaved families to extend her heartfelt condolences and provided support as they
prepared to lay their children to rest.

“Children are the future of this country, and every parent looks forward to their children’s bright future. They envision their
children becoming the pillar of the family.

“No parent ever wishes to bury their child,” said Frazer as she spoke to
one of the bereaved families.

She further assured them that the KZN Department of Education will continue to provide the necessary support to the affected families as well as the psychological support to educators and learners of Mchitheki High School.
