A 28-year-old man accused of stabbing his aunt to death at her home in Phalaborwa was remanded in custody without bail.
Hanno Steinberg was taken into custody shortly after police responded to a report of a female victim attacked at her home in Phalaborwa town on Tuesday, 04 July 2024, at about 15h00
Upon arrival, the deceased, identified as Magdelene Hurst (51) was found with multiple stab wounds.
“The Police with assistance from the community, swiftly arrested the male suspect. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect entered his aunt’s house and found her lying on the couch and stabbed her with the knife.
“The victim’s father tried to rescue her while she also ran outside for safety, but the suspect overpowered both of them and stabbed the victim multiple times,” said Colonel Malesela Ledwaba .
The suspect was eventually stopped by a neighbor.
Ledwaba said further information indicated that the suspect used to stay with the family, but he was chased out of the house because of uncalled-for behavior.
“He was charged with murder and appeared before Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 08 July. The case was postponed until Friday 13 July 2024 for profiling and formal bail application,” said Ledwaba.
