‘Mayor of Alex’, Shadrack Mkhonto has returned to Alex, where he belongs.
This after the Alexandra Constituency (BCM) wrote a letter to Bongani Baloyi, Provincial Chairperson of Action SA dated 22 August 2022.
“We want Councillor Shadrack Mkhonto back in Alexandra Constituency. We are writing to you in high spirit, asking for councillor Mkhonto to be brought back to Alexandra Constituency. We believe you will agree with us that ever since the Local government Elections, there has been no visibility in Alexandra when it comes to the work of the party,” read part of the internal letter that Mashamba Media recieved from members of ActionSA in Alexandra.
The letter requested that Mkhonto be reassigned to oversee the party’s growth in Alexandra.
“Because, if we continue in this way we will lose support as things stand. Cllr Mkhonto has a leadership reputation in Alex since his ANC days as an activist. He is a tried and tested leader to go blow by blow with the ANC, as he established DA in Alex and made sure it grows beyond its potential. He has assisted so many Alexandra residents; he is well known, loved, and respected.
“For us to be competitive in 2024, we need a tried and tested leader who is fearless and is a foot soldier. Wherever Mkhonto is involved, activities do happen and residents do vouch for him. He has brought DA, EFF and ANC down to their knees in Alex, and in particular, in ward 105. We need him for ActionSA 2024 in Alex.”
The BCM believes that the morale of ActionSA members in Alex has declined since Mkhonto was deployed in Midrand..
Mkhonto confirmed to Mashamba Media that he was back to Alex. He said back in March this year, his party deployed him in region A to spread his wings.
However, he said his deployment didn’t sit well with the ordinary Alexandrians and the party members in Alex.
The mayor of Alex, as Mkhonto is affectionately known, said the work that he has done in Alex ever since he became a politician, speaks volumes.
He said that’s why there was an outcry to call him back to Alex. “My service delivery determination here in Alex without political intolerance brought me back home. I have in my 20 years of being a community leader, serviced all residents of Alex who requested assistance from me without fear or favour.
“I have done so with the love that I have for Alex and its people. Being back in Alex means that I would be delivering services to those who request my interventions as the PR councilor of the city of Johannesburg on their service delivery issues.
“Alex has got a special place in my heart, the oldest township in Johannesburg, yet the under developed and ignored township.
” That gives me sleepless nights as I long for the development of this township, not the political field for parties to battle for votes and when they win, they keep quiet until another elections comes. One could reference such with what the president of the country did in 2019 when he visited Alex during the times of Alex shutdown when Mashaba was still the mayor of the city of Johannesburg.
“The current president Ramaphosa promised to build 1 million houses for Alex residents during the first five years of his tenure in office should they vote the ANC ANC.
“However, there is nothing happening even today after three years on his office term.
“It’s this kind of things which makes me not to sleep, because the Alexandrians are being used as the castles in a political chess, yet when they win the game, they don’t get credit, they get ignored and credit goes to the queen.
“Let’s us get united and sing with one voice on matters that concerns Alex than to put the political party interests over our township. Under my leadership Alexandra won’t be the same again -Mkhonto is back in Town.”
