MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development Lebogang Maile will visit Merafong City Local Municipality tomorrow Monday 05 December 2022.
Maile will hold a high-level bilateral with Merafong City Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Nozuko Best to find workable solutions to the challenge of sinkholes that continue to threaten the homes of many working class families in Khutsong and surrounding areas.
According to Maile “it is heart-breaking to see a house being swallowed by a sinkhole. Something fundamental needs to be done in lieu of the absence of a policy position to build a house similar in value to the original house”.
MEC Maile, accompanied by Executive Mayor Cllr Best and MMC for Human Settlements Cllr Ntombiyoxolo Sefako will visit the affected areas and interact with members of the community.
The Merafong City Local Municipality is a Category B municipality situated within the West Rand District in the Gauteng Province.
It is the largest of three municipalities in the district, making up almost half of its geographical area.
It is situated about 65km from Johannesburg and is serviced by a number of major roads, including the N12 from Johannesburg to Cape Town and the N14, which is the main road between Gauteng and Mahikeng (previously Mafikeng) via Ventersdorp.
Its boundaries enclose some of the richest gold mines in the world.
