The civil unrest that discredited the entire country and made its leaders a laughing stock, has led Alexandra CBD to become a waste, following a massive looting.

The violent attacks on businesses, which started in KZN with some members demanding the release of former President Jacob Zuma, spread to many places like a wild fire.

When the looters forcefully opened secure stores in Alex, the police tried in vain to contain the situation. At the same time, the thugs seemed determined to kill the police.

While hooligans used deadly weapons, such as pangas or illegal weapons, it was unfortunate that law enforcement agencies only had one tool.. Rubber bullet!

However, the community could not sit down, fold their arms and watch their beloved township rot as the disorder was massively unbelievable.

A call for cleanup of the affected areas was launched and widely circulated in search for volunteers.

And during the period when Alexandra, in particular, became a hot spot for COVID-19, there were chances that the groupings could have resulted in many residents becoming infected.

“We had an estimate number of more than 1500 + community members and others from different locations who came to support the clean up Alexandra campaign, “Madoda Shongwe, one of the organizers told Alex Reporter.

“I would like to humble myself and extend greafullness for the support we received. The community of Alexandra came together and worked the streets and malls of their Kasi. This shows that we have people who care about their Kasi,” said Shongwe, fondly known as Sthupa.

He thanked all stakeholders who came with donations and support materials for the work done.

“We thank them and wish to continue working with them in various projects that uplift the community. Let’s keep the good work up.”

Shongwe said that their work as a community did not end here.

“We are responsible for the well being of our Kasi. Let’s protect our own and protect love, peace and happiness.”
