Police in Gauteng have recovered more than three hundred (300) unlicensed firearms and more than four thousand (4000) rounds of live ammunition in the past two weeks (14 November 2022 to 03 December 2022).
The recovery of the weapons occurred at a time when the police intensified the fight against contact crimes that include murder and armed robbery.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said more police officers have been deployed on the ground to conduct crime prevention patrols, stop-and-searches as well as roadblocks.
“Among those arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, are suspects believed to be involved in gangsterism and ATM Bombings.
Masondo said police in Eldorado Park were patrolling along the hotspot area when they searched a man who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm loaded with eight (8) rounds of ammunition.
“The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Westbury, is allegedly wanted for murder cases in Sophiatown.
“All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to determine whether they can be linked to other serious crimes committed, ” said Masondo.
He said community members were urged to report the crime to their nearest police station, SAPS Crime Stop 08600 10111, or leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.
