Motalatale Modiba, GDoH Head of Communication has confirmed that the death toll now stands at 27 from the Boksburg explosion.
10 of these are health workers from Tambo Memorial Hospital.
MEMORIAL SERVICE TO BE HELD IN HONOUR OF VICTIMS.
The Gauteng Provincial Government, together with the City of Ekurhuleni will on Friday, 30 December 2022, host a joint memorial service in honour of those that lost their lives following the tragic incident which led to fatalities, and many injured, according to Vuyo Mhaga, spokesperson for Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi.
In the meantime, the Gas Tanker driver has been released on warning pending further investigations.
On 27 December 2022, the suspect on the Boksburg explosion incident was interviewed and released on warning by the police pending further investigations, this according to Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
“The suspect will therefore not be appearing in court today, 28 December 2022.
“As soon as investigations are concluded, the case docket will be sent to court for a decision,” Muridili said.
The 32-year-old suspect was charged with multiple counts of culpable homicide, negligent causing of an explosion resulting in death [Act 26 of 1956, Section 27 (2)] and malicious damage to property.
Preliminary investigations found that the loaded gas tanker got stuck trying to drive through a low bridge and the impact resulted in an explosion.
The gas tanker was allegedly driving from Richard’s Bay en route to Botswana.
