A security guard was shot and killed while on duty this afternoon in (27 October 2020) Alexandra.
It is understood that an armed suspect wearing a uniform of the 24/7 security company entered the head office in Wynberg, pretending to be one of the workers.
The suspect was then identified as an imposter. Officers tried to apprehend him, but he ran away on foot. Two guards gave chase in a car and he was cornered at 1st Avenue Florence Mophosho Street (Vasco). The suspect opened fire at the officers who retaliated. One security officer was shot and killed while his partner was shot and injured in the abdomen.
Alexandra police spokesperson Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha said the injured officer was rushed to hospital in a stable condition.
“The suspect believed to be in his 40’s, ran into one of the houses and hid himself.
“The police had to use tear gas to force him out. There was a child in the house but luckily he was not harmed.”
Mbatha said the suspect was arrested and police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
