Serial rapist sentenced to 988 years and five life imprisonment

#NotInMyName has welcomed the sentence handed down by Judge Joseph Masupa at Pretoria High Court to serial rapist Sello Abraham Maponya Todayactions (27 May 2021).

 

Maponya was sentenced to 988 years and five life imprisonment after he was found guilty of 32 counts of rape, 40 robberies and house breaking.

 

He committed these offenses from 2014 and until he was subsequently arrested on 20 March 2019.

 

Secretary -General of #NotInMyName, Themba Masango said they were thankful that the Maponya had been given 988 years and four life sentences.

 

“We Want to thank the honorable court for doing the right thing. South Africa continues to be faced with the scourge of Gender Based Violence and is known as the rape capital of the world.

“It is only sentences like this that will deter would-be-perpetrators from continuing with their evil actions,” said Masango.
