ActionSA PR councillor Shadrack Mkhonto came out guns blazing and blamed the city of Johannesburg human settlement for the agonizing state Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel in Alexandra has become.
Mkhonto, the mayor of Alex, stated that R17.5m was allocated to renovate the hostel, but there was no indication that the money was used to improve the aged facility.
“When the petition committee did an oversight to check the progress of the work done, it found nothing amounting to R17.5m. Instead, the hostel still looks the same with unpleasant living conditions due to lack of infrastructure repairment.
“The right to adequate standard of living, which attributes to the right to adequate housing specifically in this case, has been compromised by corruption and lack of accountability from the Human Settlement officials,” said Mkhonto.
He expressed sadness for Alex residents as every time funds are allocated to improve their living conditions, corruption occurs and the funds are never used for their intended purposes.
“One could remember the Alex Renewal Project and now is Hellen Joseph Women’s Hostel.
“Something needs to be done by the Alex residents to stand up for themselves and put political intolerance aside,” said Mkhonto.
