Shadrack Mkhonto, a PR councillor and parliamentary candidate for ActionSA, is always volunteering his time, even in wards belonging to his opposition.
You can even call him at 2 am, he is available and ready to help residents without making noise.
His popularity gained momentum when residents nick-named him ‘Mayor of Alex’ for his unwavering love he has for the people of Alex.
Silver Town residents in Setjwetla were left without a chemical toilet for months after it was stolen in mid-December 2023.
But, their immediate hope was Mkhonto due to the difficulty of reaching their DA ward councillor who is allegedly not available.
“Upon returning from their holiday, they were shocked to discover that their location did not have a chemical toilet. The toilet was stolen.
“At the end of January, they reported the problem to me,” said the mayor.
He said he reported the matter to Joburg Water, which dispatched its team to check the area.
He said after that, Joberg Water informed him that the chemical toilet Would be delivered in a few days.
“Yesterday (16th of February), I received a call from the complainant to inform me that a chemical toilet had been delivered to their place.
” Five families are using the toilet. I went and met with them and they were so thankful for the services that I rendered to them. Because for the past months, they had been struggling to relieve themselves. They had to beg from others and that created noise,” he said.
