Six metro police officers were arrested for robbing a man after a routine traffic stop.
Officers took the victim to Home Affairs before illegally searching his house and stealing money.
Six Ekurhuleni metro police officers have been arrested for allegedly robbing a man after stopping him for a traffic violation.
The officers—five men and one woman—were arrested at their Kempton Park offices by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
“It is alleged that on 5 March 2024, the accused officers, aged between 31 and 39 years old, stopped the victim, a Congolese national, for an alleged traffic offence,” said the police.
After checking his documents, they took him to Home Affairs in Boksburg to verify his status in South Africa. Then, they drove him to his house in a Boksburg estate.
The officers searched his home without a warrant and took his money.
They are now facing charges of robbery with violence, extortion, and obstructing justice. All six are being held at Boksburg police station and will appear in court soon.
IPID, which investigates crimes committed by police officers, will release more details later.
