Sthembile Thusi (19) is probably a relatively unknown girl. But she’s not new to community participation; she was recently involved with the Alex Clean Up campaign.

During this review period, she is eager to inform matriculants of the need to apply for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) on time.

The second-year student at UJ is a volunteer tutor who has been assisting learners for the past two years in applying for the NSFAS.

“Since it’s exam season and NSFAS has finally opened its doors, I’m appealing to grade 12 students to apply for NSFAS as soon as possible.

NSFAS supports those who want to pursue their careers in higher education institutions, but who come from disadvantaged backgrounds or who cannot afford to pay their own costs.

“The reason why I encourage grade 12s to apply for NSFAS specifically is due to the fact that it gives opportunities to average learners as well unlike other bursaries which demand 70% and above in all subjects,” she says.

The Bachelor of Health in Medical Laboratory Science student says matric students were working very hard.

“Do not shy away from applying for funding, especially at an early stage. I am here to assist you because I know and understand that not everyone has access to data and internet and I understand the system better.

“Contact us if you need tutoring, you will never be alone. As you begin your final examinations, I wish you great success.

“But remember, this year determines what you’ll be next year. Life doesn’t end in Alex, and it doesn’t mean that if you’re from Gomorrah you won’t make it.”

The beautiful young lady with brain tutors Life Sciences, Geography, IsiZulu Home Language, FAL and English Home Language and; FAL (Grades 10-12).

She tells our news team that she loves doing community work, especially knowing that it not only helps improve her community, but also creates a better world.
