The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department CLU unit nabbed two Tshwane Metro police pfficers and an accomplice following a truck hijacking syndicate operating on the R21.
A grey BMW 3 series stopped the truck on the R21. The vehicle, equipped with white emitting lights, looked suspicious.
Spokesperson for EMPD, Lt Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said,” Based on the suspicion of the officers, they conducted a vehicle enquiry check and the vehicle came out as having been recovered.
“The truck driven by the third suspect, spotted the EMPD unmarked vehicle slowing down, and it sped past the officers.
“This was after the occupants of the BMW , being TMPD corrupt officers were interrogated by the EMPD officers. A chase ensued, which saw the vehicle being abandoned along the R21 Southbound before R562 off-ramp.
“The EMPD officers pursued the suspect on foot, until being apprehended in a nearby bush, with the assistance of GDOCS and SAPS choppers.”
Thepa said the preliminary reports suggested that the driver was abducted and dropped off in the Bapsfontein area, and further taken to Olifantsfontein SAPS to register a case.
“The suspects are conferred with the following charges: truck hijacking and possession of goods suspected to be stolen,” he said.
Thepa said the truck was transported to Aerton Police Yard, for further processing.
“The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.The space for criminals in the Gauteng City Region is being closed off by law enforcement agencies, operating in unison.
“The few criminals in our mist disguised in uniform will be apprehended and brought to book. We congratulate collaborative efforts by all those involved,” said Thepa.
