The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has commended the rapid response leading to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a firearm stolen from police attached to Westenburg Police Station,Capricorn District on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.
The suspects, aged 30 and 35, were apprehended in Luthuli Park within the Seshego policing precinct. This followed an intelligence-driven operation that commenced on Sunday and culminated in early hours of Tuesday, 29 October 2024.
The 35-year-old suspect was located at his residence, where he was found in possession of the robbed assault rifle. The second suspect was arrested nearby with a rifle magazine containing three live rounds, as well as dagga and illicit cigarettes valued at over R12,000.
The arrests stemmed from an attack on police officers who were on duty when a group of four suspects stole an assault rifle from one of the officers in the vehicle.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if the recovered firearm was used in the commission of the crime and to trace additional ammunition.
Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 31 October 2024, facing charges including assault on police, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of dagga and illicit cigarettes.
The Provincial Commissioner has issued a stern warning to those who attack police officers and undermine the rule of law, stating that they will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable for their actions.
