Agnes Malatjie was only 13 years old when she discovered she had such strong leadership skills to lead from the front.
She gained her leadership abilities while attending bible lessons at Ikemeleng Youth Centre. They had to work in teams for the activities and most of the times she would be chosen to lead the teams.
The single mother, blessed with a son, was born and grew up in Alexandra. She describes herself as a young woman who is very sparkling, extroverted, loud , full of energy, affectionate and enthusiastic.
She subsequently joined the ANCYL when she was approximately 15 years old. She used to participate in Ward 75 politics, but it didn’t last long because her mom wanted her to focus more on school.
When asked whether her activism had a negative impact on her normal lifestyle, Agnes responded: “Yes and no. Yes, it has interfered with my normal life, because I had to cut my social life and focus more on the movement.
” And I recently lost my job because of my dedication to the
movement. However , I’d say No. It hasn’t really impacted on my normal life, because the movement is my life and I know many families will be able to put bread on their tables,” she said.
Agns believes that what she does for the community is her mission and calling.
“My dream is to see Alexandra’s dignity restored, the youth of South Africa free from substance abuse, crime, etc. And to see South Africans being able to do things on their own without always expecting from the government.”
As far as her birthday is concerned, she says that being 30 means that she is no longer a child.
“I’m now a young woman, who is more responsible and has the wisdom of making important decisions in her life and in general.”
When asked if she attends church, she tried to convince us that she is a church woman.
“Believe it or not 🙈. Although I haven’t been to church in ages, I’m a member of Thembelihle Apostolic Church in Christ.”
Her advice to young people. ” To a young person out there, if you can see it’s wrong, then there’s still hope for you to change it. Take charge of your life choices young person, ” she said.
“Thank you God for the wisdom, strength, guidance and love,” she concluded.
