GAUTENG – Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Germiston conducted a sting operation which resulted in the arrest of a 55 year old police Lieutenant Colonel attached to the Douglasdale police station.
The colonel was positively linked to accusations of extortion and corruption on Wednesday, April 7.
His arrest is linked to the alleged extortion and corruption which took place at a Bed & Breakfast in Randburg where him and his accomplice, Constable Soja Tshabalala (37) allegedly demanded an amount of R60 000 from the complainant to avoid being arrested on allegations of not complying with SARS tax regulations and operating an illegal brothel, in March 2018.
Among the suspects were unknown individuals who identified themselves as SARS officials.
The suspects allegedly threatened to shut down the company if the complainant failed to respond to their requests.
They reportedly forced the plaintiff to open his financial accounts on a laptop and transferred R35, 000 to the bank account of one of the suspects.
The matter was subsequently referred back to the Hawks for further investigation.
Warrant of arrests was issued for the suspects’ apprehension. Tshabalala handed himself in at the Hawks’ office last month, appeared in court and has since been remanded in custody.
The warrant of arrest was executed for the Lieutenant Colonel’s apprehension in his Aspen Hills home, south of Johannesburg.
He is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court facing charges of corruption and extortion. Investigation continues.
